use the bbc Spanish steps free online course to start learning. It’s well thought , easy to understand and once you finish it, you will know up to European level A1.

DO NOT USE BABEL! everything is literally translated and often makes no sense. i recommend byki.com you can buy the program or get a free download and they’ve got hundreds of language lists for spanish and it’s free. i hope this helps. and shouldn’t the point of going to spanish class be to learn spanish? those rules are stupid
