Tips for Learning Spanish

Learning your next language is always a great idea. In the U.S., Spanish is nearly as commonplace as English. Consider this, how often do you hear English repeated in Spanish? That’s one reason why it’s a good idea to learn Spanish. Yet there are a lot of people who experience difficulty with a new language. If you’re one of those, here are some helpful tips for you to use.

Remember that you need to be patient. It’s doubtful you’ll be fluent in Spanish within 24 hours. You could have all the rules of vocabulary and conjugations memorized yet still have some difficulty with the sentences. You’ll get nowhere fast if you put a lot of pressure on yourself to speak fluently in too short a time. Just relax and learn in a slow but sure manner. You’ll be more comfortable and relaxed with the language. It’s also good to learn slowly is because people will have more patience with you if they know you’re trying to learn their language. If you try to pass yourself off as completely fluent too soon you could offend someone! An important skill to acquire is to practice thinking in the new language. Whenever you catch yourself thinking about anything, make the effort to translate whatever it is into Spanish. Don’t expect to do this perfectly right away. Everyone has a certain amount of “mental chatter” in their heads; when you notice this, think how the words would translate into Spanish. This is an ability you will improve at the more you practice it. You will be surprised at how fast you will be able to do this translation process once you practice it for a while. You will know you have mastered this when you find that you sometimes think in the new language when you aren’t even intending. Then, to improve your conversational skills, you’ll want to practice speaking your thoughts out loud.

Watch movies and television shows that are in Spanish. There are a lot of shows broadcast in Spanish now and every movie rental house will have a section of movies in other languages. You’ll be able to learn how Spanish is really spoken without needing to travel. This is great if you don’t live near a Spanish speaking population. Just turn on the subtitles when you watch. Then, as you learn to identify parts of speech and words, you can turn off the subtitles and see how much you understand. Keep doing this, and your learning will improve fast.

Don’t think that it has to be hard work or a chore to learn this new language. Keep in mind that Spanish is much easier to learn than many other languages. Many people want to learn new languages nowadays, which is why there are such a variety of different systems and courses on the market. Pick the system that appeals to you most. It becomes much easier to learn when you find a teacher, course or system that really appeals to you. Just take a step by step approach to learning Spanish and one day you will find that you are speaking and understanding it fluently!
